Balloon Mitral Valvuloplasty
The mitral valve is responsible for regulating blood flow in and out of the left ventricle (main pumping chamber of the heart). When this valve becomes narrowed , blood flow can be restricted, causing symptoms such as shortness of breath, fatigue or heart failure.
Balloon Mitral Valvuloplasty is a minimally invasive procedure that is used to treat a narrowed mitral valve. This procedure is performed using a catheter-based approach, via a small incision in the groin followed by placement of a balloon across the mitral valve under X ray and ultrasound guidance. The balloon is then inflated, stretching the valve and opening up the narrowing that was preventing blood from flowing freely through the heart. In all cases, Prof Sanjay Patel will review your echo and determine whether valvuloplasty is suitable for you.

Balloon Mitral Valvuloplasty
Who is Balloon Mitral Valvuloplasty best for?
Balloon Mitral Valvuloplasty is best for patients who have been diagnosed with stenosis, or narrowing, of mitral valve and are experiencing symptoms such as shortness of breath or fatigue. The procedure is sometimes considered as a temporary solution for patients who are not eligible for valve replacement surgery or as a bridge to surgery for patients who need more time to prepare for a full valve replacement procedure.
Is Balloon Mitral Valvuloplasty painful?
Balloon Mitral Valvuloplasty is typically performed under general anaesthesia. Some patients may experience mild discomfort after the procedure, but this can usually be managed with medication.
How long does the procedure take?
The procedure usually takes a few hours to complete, depending on the complexity of the case.
What is the recovery time after Balloon Mitral Valvuloplasty?
Most patients are able to go home the following day after the procedure. Patients may experience some mild discomfort or soreness at the incision site, but this should improve within a few days. Patients should avoid strenuous activity for a few days after the procedure and follow their doctor’s instructions for a safe and healthy recovery.
How effective is Balloon Mitral Valvuloplasty?
Balloon Mitral Valvuloplasty can provide significant symptom relief and improve heart function for several years in some cases.
